Gout sufferers discuss stevia in the gout forums. But they need facts to discuss with their doctors. To see if stevia will help their gout treatment plan. So here is a summary of current research into effects of stevia on uric acid.
Stevia & Uric Acid Research Topics
- Stevia Residue Extract Blocks Uric Acid Production
- A stevia by-product reduces uric acid levels and oxidative stress.
Mehmood A , Zhao L , Wang C , Hossen I , Raka RN , Zhang H . Stevia residue extract increases intestinal uric acid excretion via interactions with intestinal urate transporters in hyperuricemic mice. Food Funct. 2019 Dec 11;10(12):7900-7912. Erratum in: Food Funct. 2020 Mar 26;11(3):2764. PMID: 31789332.
Conclusion: the by-product of stevia has the potential to combat hyperuricemia, and can be used as a functional ingredient in the development of nutraceutical products.
- Stevia helps Kidney Disease and Uric Acid
- 250 mg stevia capsule twice daily reduces uric acid averages from 6 mg/dL to 5 mg/dL.
Rizwan F, Rashid HU, Yesmine S, Monjur F, Chatterjee TK. Preliminary analysis of the effect of Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) in patients with chronic kidney disease (stage I to stage III). Contemp Clin Trials Commun. 2018 Aug 21;12:17-25. PMID: 30211340; PMCID: PMC6129687.
Conclusion: This study revealed the potential benefit of oral Stevia in achieving the reduction in Serum uric acid and Microalbumin.
- Stevia Residue Extract with Allopurinol reduces Uric Acid
-
Mehmood A, Zhao L, Wang C, Hossen I, Nadeem M. Stevia residue extract alone and combination with allopurinol attenuate hyperuricemia in fructose-PO-induced hyperuricemic mice. J Food Biochem. 2020 Jan;44(1):e13087. Epub 2019 Nov 3. PMID: 31680279.
Conclusion: STVRE (Stevia residue extract) with allopurinol [reduced uric acid…] Furthermore, STVRE combined with allopurinol have renal protective effect by decreasing inflammatory responses and improving antioxidant status
- Stevia Uric Acid Blocker and Anti-Inflammatory
-
Can, Zehra, and Nimet Baltas. "Bioactivity and enzyme inhibition properties of Stevia rebaudiana." Current Enzyme Inhibition 12, no. 2 (2016): 188-194.
The XO inhibition effect of the Stevia rebaudiana leaf was also investigated and the IC50 value was found to be 23.51±0.11 g/mL […] The results indicate that the Stevia rebaudiana plant is not only rich in steviol glycosides, but is also a powerful natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory with gastro-protective properties.
Stevia & Uric Acid Research Summary
Stevia extracts have been shown to block uric acid production and also reduce inflammation. However, there are no tests on human gout sufferers. So there is no indication of an effective rate of stevia consumption for gout sufferers.
Your Stevia & Uric Acid Research Topics
If you favor stevia, it is a good idea to discuss with your doctor how it might support your existing gout management program. Because there is evidence to show that it might be beneficial. But there is insufficient evidence to suggest it can be the main element in uric acid treatment.
Which aspects of consuming stevia are you interested in? How do you think stevia consumption might help your gout?
